PGWP Expiry in Canada: Work Permits, Status and Options

What happens when your post-graduation work permit expires? Review the passport-limited extension exception, bridging open work permits, restoration timing, visitor status and work-authorisation risks.

An expiring PGWP does not create a general right to another PGWP. IRCC describes the permit as a one-time opportunity, with a separate extension possibility where passport validity shortened the original permit; a claimed “2026 extension” needs its own current official policy, not a social-media headline. Official source summary

Start with the document that expires

Put the actual PGWP beside your passport and any later IRCC correspondence. Record the permit’s expiry date exactly, including the year, and identify any employer or occupation conditions written on it. A date remembered from graduation or a job contract is a poor substitute for the immigration document.

Make a second line for every application submitted since that permit was issued. Include what was requested, when it was submitted and whether a decision arrived. Keep the complete confirmation and submitted forms together so a reviewer can see what was actually filed, rather than rely on a description such as “my extension is in.”

Build the expiry plan from documents, not rumours

  1. Today: record the document dates
Copy the PGWP end date, passport validity and dates of any later application or decision.
  2. Before expiry: identify a lawful option
Separate an eligible work-permit application from a visitor application and from a PR profile.
  3. At any change: reassess work permission
Record the legal basis for work, or the date work must stop. Travel can change the analysis.
  4. If status is lost: obtain a dated assessment
Check restoration eligibility immediately. A pending restoration request does not itself authorise work.

This is an organising tool. It does not decide maintained status, restoration eligibility or a permit application.

Distinguish a passport correction from a new extension policy

IRCC’s passport exception concerns someone who qualified for a longer PGWP but received less time because their passport was expiring. Renewing a passport does not by itself create extra PGWP eligibility after the full eligible period has already been issued. Preserve the original approval and any remark about passport validity. Official source summary

For a proposed public policy, ask for its official title, eligibility dates and application instructions. Read the actual eligibility language before spending money or changing work arrangements. An article about an expired facilitation measure is historical information, even when it appears near the top of a search result.

A PR profile and a work permit answer different questions

An Express Entry profile is not a submitted permanent-residence application. IRCC’s detailed bridging instructions require the relevant application stage and supporting acknowledgement, alongside status and location conditions. Entering the pool or hoping for an invitation cannot be treated as bridging-work-permit approval. Official source summary

Prepare a small PR record that identifies the program, profile or application number, submission date and correspondence. Use separate labels for profile, invitation, application acknowledgement and decision. These labels make a consultation more useful because they show which stage exists and which stage is only anticipated.

Check bridging eligibility against the correct program

IRCC’s Help Centre states a four-month-before-expiry condition in its Express Entry BOWP answer. The detailed BOWP page sets out separate eligibility rules for Express Entry, provincial nominees and other PR categories; do not treat the four-month wording as a universal threshold for every category. First identify the exact PR program and application stage, then follow that category’s current instructions. Official source summary

Ask the reviewer to identify the exact category and current instructions being applied. If the file depends on nomination conditions or an eligibility assessment, bring those documents as well as the acknowledgement. A generic checklist downloaded for a different program can conceal the condition that matters in your file.

Consider employer support as a separate assessment

If the proposed option is an employer-supported permit, begin with the employer, actual duties and proposed work location. Ask which permit category is being considered and whether the employer must first complete another step. Do not assume the employer can solve the issue merely by writing that the job is essential to its business.

Request a written list of information the employer is prepared to provide. Keep the offer, job description and explanation of the proposed permit together, with unresolved requirements clearly marked. Until the category is established, avoid describing this as an approved extension or promising an employer that you can continue without interruption.

A provincial nomination is not employment permission

For a provincial option, record the exact stream, province and stage being considered. An expression of interest, invitation, application and nomination are different records. The work-permit question still needs its own answer, including the conditions on any provincial support letter and the federal instructions relevant to that situation.

Do not move provinces or change jobs solely because a historical comparison table suggests a route might fit. Write down the assumptions first: where you intend to live, which employer is involved, what work is claimed and which source is current. The next review should test those assumptions before they become commitments.

A visitor record concerns staying, not continuing your job

IRCC distinguishes a visitor record from a visa. A visitor option may address a request to remain in Canada, but it does not extend employment permission. Treat living arrangements, financial support, travel documents and the date work stops as separate planning questions. Official source summary

Prepare a realistic visitor budget before selecting this option. List housing, food, insurance and existing obligations without counting income from work that has not been authorised. If someone else will provide support, identify what they are offering and keep that practical arrangement separate from any promise about the immigration decision.

Maintained status needs an individual timeline

The effect of an application filed before expiry depends on what was requested and the applicable conditions. IRCC’s post-application instructions explain continued work in qualifying extension situations and the effect of leaving Canada. A receipt does not answer every question about the right to remain or work. Official source summary

Make the timeline precise enough to review: current permit, application submission, expiry, travel and decision. If there are two applications, include both rather than selecting the one that appears most favourable. Ask for the legal basis and limits of any continued work permission in ordinary language you can explain to an employer.

After a loss of status, check restoration promptly

The ordinary restoration guide describes a possible application within 90 days of losing status, subject to conditions. Restoration is an assessment, not an automatic extra work period. Individual special measures can differ. For example, IRCC has a time-limited measure for certain people directly affected by a natural disaster in Canada from April 1, 2026, through November 30, 2028. Eligibility is not automatic: it depends on being directly affected, having valid temporary resident status on the date affected, applying within six months of the date they were directly affected by the disaster, and providing the required attestation. Workers seeking to renew a permit must also meet the measure’s conditions for their work permit and request to extend or restore status. It does not give every PGWP holder extra time or permission to work. Check the live instructions for eligibility and application steps. Official source summary

Gather the expired document, complete application history and explanation of what happened. Keep the facts accurate even if an error is uncomfortable to describe. A useful explanation identifies the event, dates and records; it does not replace the event with a story that conflicts with earlier forms.

Use planning checkpoints before the last week

About a year before expiry, assemble your work and immigration history and identify the PR program assumptions you want assessed. At roughly six months, update those records and ask what employer or language steps remain realistic. At roughly three months, review the actual application requirements and a fallback plan for stopping work or leaving if needed.

These are suggested planning checkpoints, not government deadlines or a promise that a route will become available. Move them earlier if an employer process or missing document needs time. If expiry is already close, start with the immediate status assessment instead of trying to recreate the timetable in reverse.

Leaving Canada can be part of a properly documented plan

Consider departure arrangements alongside the other options rather than treating them as a failure to discuss. Preserve employment records, tax information, school documents and copies of submitted applications before leaving. Record the departure date and keep access to the email and accounts used for official correspondence.

Before arranging a return, check the entry document and proposed activity separately from any PR application. Do not assume that an existing profile, former job or previously issued permit settles the next entry. Bring the travel plan to the same status review so the consequences can be considered together.

What to bring to an expiry consultation

Bring the PGWP, current and old passports, all later applications and decisions, employment records and the exact PR documents you already hold. Add a short list of upcoming travel, employer expectations and family-document dates. IRCC makes permit and immigration decisions; a consultation should identify supported options and unresolved conditions before you commit.

The PGWP program overview and CEC work-month guide address different parts of this review. Use the program-status page with its date, and bring the underlying documents rather than a calculator result alone.

Questions about what happens after your PGWP expires

Can I renew a PGWP because my job continues?

A continuing job does not create a second PGWP. Check whether the passport-shortening exception applies or a different permit category can be established.

Does an Express Entry profile qualify me for a BOWP?

No. The current detailed BOWP instructions require the relevant PR application stage and other conditions. A profile in the pool is not that application.

Can I work while requesting restoration?

A restoration request does not itself authorise work. Obtain advice about the particular status history and any separate work authority before continuing.

Does a visitor record let me keep working?

No. A visitor record concerns authorised stay. Employment permission must be established separately.

General information only. Requirements can change, and no outcome is guaranteed.

IRCC: PGWP renewal and passport exception

A PGWP is normally a one-time opportunity. IRCC allows an extension where passport expiry shortened the permit below the full period the graduate was eligible to receive. The Help Centre’s four-month BOWP condition is stated for Express Entry applicants; other PR categories have separate rules on the detailed BOWP page.

IRCC: bridging open work permits

BOWP eligibility depends on the named PR program and application stage. An Express Entry profile is not a complete PR application. Valid, maintained and restoration-related situations are addressed separately.

IRCC: temporary measures after domestic natural disasters (2026–2028)

IRCC says certain temporary residents directly affected by a natural disaster in Canada may apply within six months of the date they were directly affected by the disaster for restoration or related extensions, instead of the ordinary 90 days. They must have held valid temporary resident status on the date they were affected and provide the required attestation. Workers renewing a permit have additional conditions. This measure is limited, expires November 30, 2028, and may be revoked; check current instructions.
