A bridging open work permit can be available to principal applicants in specified permanent-residence programs, but a PR profile or invitation alone does not establish eligibility. Use IRCC's current program-specific instructions and your actual worker-status record; do not rely on a universal four-month window carried over from an older checklist.
The practical problem is a gap between a temporary work permit and the PR decision. Keep eligibility for the new permit, the deadline to preserve temporary status and authority to work while waiting as three separate questions. This guide explains how to build that record, not how to obtain an automatic extension.
The BOWP timing map
- Name the PR program and stage
A profile, invitation, acknowledgment and complete application are different evidence.
- Reconstruct temporary status
Record actual expiry, submission dates and conditions.
- Check the correct BOWP branch
Assess every condition and the documents that support it.
- Plan work and travel separately
Requested new conditions do not automatically replace the current permit.
This original planning diagram separates questions. It is not an eligibility result or a prediction.
Which permanent-residence stage have you actually reached?
Write down the PR program and the latest completed step. A profile in an Express Entry pool, an invitation, a submitted application and an acknowledgment of receipt are not interchangeable records. A hopeful application plan cannot stand in for a required completed step.
For the Express Entry BOWP branch, IRCC requires a complete PR application that has passed its completeness check, the acknowledgment and the other stated conditions. The applicant must be the principal applicant. Locate the actual acknowledgment in the account and confirm that it belongs to the application being relied on.
Put the submission confirmation and any later request beside it. If a file has been returned, refused or otherwise changed, obtain advice on its consequences before describing it as a pending complete application. Do not choose an answer in a work-permit form solely because a PR payment was made.

Why should an old four-month checklist be rechecked?
Do not treat a four-month shorthand as a universal filing rule. The current public BOWP page opened for this guide sets program-specific conditions and does not establish that slogan as a universal eligibility rule. This draft therefore does not advise everyone to wait until exactly four months before expiry or claim that everyone can apply at that point.
Use the branch for the actual PR program, including the relevant Express Entry, provincial or other listed route. A requirement taken from another branch may not fit your file. Record the source, date and the exact condition you are assessing so another person can review the reasoning.
Planning early is still useful because records and alternative options take time to assess. Early preparation is different from premature filing. Create a review date well before expiry, identify what is missing and ask what lawful option is available if the BOWP requirements are not yet met.

What does your present immigration record say?
Collect the current work permit, passport, prior applications and submission records. Record permit expiry and every printed condition, including an employer, occupation, location or medical restriction. The word open does not mean every possible job is permitted in all circumstances.
IRCC's Express Entry BOWP branch addresses people with a valid work permit and temporary status, people who have maintained worker status and people eligible for restoration and a work permit. Those situations are different. An expired permit should trigger a careful chronology, not an assumption that filing a PR application preserved work authorization.
If the dates are uncertain, obtain the actual records before deciding when work can continue. State when the previous permit expired and when any extension was submitted. A professional needs those facts to assess the relevant rule; the day you started preparing forms does not prove a timely application.

What can you do while an extension is being processed?
IRCC explains that eligible applicants who applied before expiry can continue working under the same conditions as the original permit while the extension is decided. That does not itself grant the open conditions requested in a new application. A worker restricted to a particular employer should not assume they can change employers merely because the application asks for a BOWP.
Keep the submitted application, payment receipt and applicable proof letter with the old permit. Check that the letter and the underlying eligibility concern your application. IRCC expressly distinguishes late extensions and first work permits from those who receive the standard continuation letter.
If an employer needs an explanation, use the actual official guidance and records. Do not edit the letter or create a different expiry date for convenience. Where a rule or document is unclear, resolve the question before treating an intended work arrangement as authorized.

How do travel and restoration change the analysis?
The Express Entry BOWP instructions require being in Canada when applying and address the effect of leaving after a work permit expires. They warn that a person who leaves after expiry cannot work until the new application is approved. A travel plan therefore needs a separate work-and-return assessment.
Do not treat a valid travel document, permission to enter and permission to work as one decision. Before departure, bring the permit and extension record to a qualified adviser and explain the planned dates and purpose. Avoid relying on an airline itinerary as proof of what immigration authorization will exist on return.
Restoration is also distinct from a timely extension. If you may need it, stop using the label maintained status as a shortcut and get advice about eligibility, deadlines and work restrictions. The ability to request a permit is not necessarily authority to work while that request waits.

What documents should support a focused BOWP review?
Build an index beginning with the PR acknowledgment, program, principal-applicant identity and current worker record. Add the document checklist for the chosen application route. Identify the evidence you have, what it proves and what remains uncertain instead of uploading a folder of unexplained duplicates.
For a provincial nomination, include the nomination document and any related conditions, then use the correct IRCC branch. Do not assume that every provincial document is a work-permit support letter or that every work-permit support letter establishes a BOWP. Ask which route the document is intended to support.
Include previous refusals, returns and status decisions. A reviewer needs the whole sequence to understand the present position. If a document is missing, mark it missing and say what steps you took to retrieve it; do not replace a government letter with a recollection of its wording.

What fees and family questions should stay separate?
IRCC's BOWP instructions call for the work-permit processing fee and open-work-permit holder fee. The current general fee list records those components separately. Check the required amount and any applicable restoration component at payment time, rather than using a PR receipt as evidence that the work application has been paid.
A spouse or child should have their own status and document review. Your potential BOWP eligibility does not decide a family member's work-permit or visitor situation. Put every family member's expiry and pending application on a separate line of the timeline.
Keep professional fees separate too. If you hire someone, confirm whether the work includes reviewing temporary status, preparing the BOWP and assessing dependant options. A narrow consultation can answer a timing question without implying that all later family applications are included.

What if you are not eligible before the present permit expires?
IRCC warns applicants not to let the work permit expire while waiting for an invitation. A BOWP is one possible route for an eligible person, not a solution for every impending expiry. The alternative depends on actual eligibility, employer involvement and the person's circumstances.
Bring the employer's plans, your current conditions and the PR timeline to the discussion. Ask which lawful application is available, what evidence it needs and whether it permits work while pending. If no option permits continuing work, a plan that assumes uninterrupted employment is not a safe planning assumption.
Do not submit an application you know does not meet the rules simply to obtain a receipt. A submission record cannot turn an ineligible route into permission. Seek individualized advice early enough to consider the real options and their effects on work, status and family plans.

Your BOWP file-review worksheet
This is an original blank worksheet, not a client account or a government checklist. Add truthful facts and mark unresolved points for advice.
| Question | Record to bring | What still needs an answer |
|---|---|---|
| PR application | Program, principal applicant, submission and acknowledgment | Has the required processing stage actually been reached? |
| Current permit | Expiry, employer and other printed restrictions | What work is authorized today? |
| Extension history | Actual submission confirmation and decision records | Is this timely extension, restoration or another situation? |
| Travel | Dates, proposed work and return documents | What changes if you leave Canada? |
| Family | Each person's permit, expiry and pending application | Which applications need a separate legal basis? |
Compare two timelines without predicting an outcome
Draw a line for the current permit and a separate line for the PR application. Mark the actual expiry, actual submission and latest government correspondence. Then add the proposed BOWP step only after identifying the conditions and evidence supporting it.
Now consider a second version in which a needed acknowledgment or other condition is not established before expiry. Write the unresolved work and status questions underneath rather than extending the line by assumption. This original exercise is a way to organize advice, not an eligibility calculator or permission to work. Bring both timelines and their records to the review so the adviser can distinguish facts from the plan you hoped would occur.
Questions about bridging open work permit
Is an Express Entry profile enough for a BOWP?
No. The current Express Entry branch requires a complete PR application at the specified stage, acknowledgment and the other eligibility conditions.
Can I switch employers as soon as I request an open permit?
Do not assume so. Continuing work while an extension is pending generally concerns the original conditions for eligible timely applicants; new requested conditions are a separate question.
Should everyone apply exactly four months before expiry?
This guide does not establish a universal four-month rule. Use the current instructions for your exact PR program and status situation.
General information only. Requirements can change and no outcome is guaranteed. IRCC, ESDC, the IRB, provincial authorities or the courts make decisions within their responsibilities.

IRCC bridging open work permits
The current page provides program-specific BOWP conditions. For Express Entry it distinguishes a submitted complete PR application from a pool profile, requires the relevant acknowledgment and addresses worker status, restoration and location. It does not support treating an old four-month slogan as a universal rule.
