An Express Entry profile is a set of factual claims that must be accurate and supported by records. Check education, language, work history and funds before relying on a score or accepting an invitation; an invitation does not verify every claim. This guide reflects official instructions checked on October 20, 2026.

- Submission
Use the actual instructions and preserve a complete copy.
This original planning diagram separates questions. It is not an eligibility result or a prediction.
Create a claim-to-document index before entering figures
Write down each claim you intend to make and the record that supports it. Separate the underlying program assessment from the CRS calculation. A precise-looking score can rest on a mistaken education equivalency, experience period or language entry, so it is useful to identify the evidence before entering the number.
Keep copies of earlier immigration forms beside the working history. Differences in dates, employer names or family information should be explained, not quietly replaced with a more favourable version. If a record is missing, mark the claim as unresolved and ask what evidence is appropriate. Do not invent documents or omit an earlier refusal to make the profile appear simpler.
Use the immigration-purpose ECA and its actual result
IRCC describes an ECA as an assessment of foreign credential validity and Canadian equivalency. It must be the appropriate immigration-purpose assessment from a designated organisation. The result does not guarantee a job or a professional licence, and it should not be replaced with your own interpretation of how the qualification compares with Canadian education.
Enter the completed credential and the assessment result accurately. If you want to claim more than one credential, check the official requirements for that claim rather than assuming one assessment covers every qualification. Record the report number and expiry in your private evidence index. Keep the original report available for the later application, not just a screenshot of a points calculator.

Choose the accepted language test version
IRCC currently accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French, subject to the applicable instructions. An academic or differently named test is not automatically interchangeable. The official page also explains which results fields to use, including specific TEF information.
Copy each ability score from the correct report field and compare it with the applicable benchmark table. Do not use an overall average to replace an individual ability requirement. Keep a second check of the test identifier and dates. A typographical error is easier to resolve before a profile or application depends on the entered result, but any material discrepancy still needs honest advice. IRCC has announced a new Labour Market Integration factor effective November 3, 2026. It will compare points for eligible Canadian work experience with points for a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation; a candidate can receive one of these, not both. Check the current CRS instructions for a profile assessed on or after that date.
Read the source summary: IRCC: Express Entry language tests. For the upcoming job-offer scoring change, see IRCC: November 2026 CRS changes.
Watch validity at both the profile and application stages
IRCC requires Express Entry language results to be less than two years old at profile completion and PR application. An ECA must also remain valid under its own instructions. A document that was valid when you started planning can expire while you are waiting or preparing an application.
Put expiry dates in a separate calendar with time to obtain updated evidence. Do not assume accepting an invitation freezes every document's validity. Review the official instructions and actual application deadline together. If a result will expire, seek advice about the available lawful steps rather than submitting an expired record or changing the date to preserve the expected score.

Match the occupation to truthful duties and work periods
A working title alone does not explain what someone did. Prepare an employment history that shows the employer, duties, location, dates and actual working arrangement. Where the work was owner-controlled or self-employed, have its treatment assessed under the specific immigration program rather than assuming payroll makes it eligible employee experience. For a closer look at qualifying Canadian Experience Class work periods, see our guide to what counts as Canadian experience.
Ask an employer to describe the real work accurately. Do not supply a copied occupational description as though it were a factual letter about duties the employer has verified. If the available records disagree, explain why and ask what supporting material is appropriate. The purpose of the document is to support a truthful claim, not to produce a desired occupation code at any cost.

Apply the correct proof-of-funds rule
The proof-of-funds requirement depends on the immigration program and any applicable exemption. IRCC's current page should be read for both the family-size amount and the conditions governing access to funds. Do not assume that having any job offer means no funds evidence is needed; the wording of the applicable exemption matters.
List the accounts and documents you propose to use, then identify ownership, access and any restrictions for individual review. Keep personal savings separate from money that belongs to a business or someone else. You cannot borrow settlement funds from another person. Disclose any loan or restriction to the adviser reviewing the evidence. A bank balance is only part of the evidence question and does not settle the legal requirement by itself.

After an invitation, review changes before submitting
An invitation should trigger another comparison between the profile claims, the current facts and the supporting records. Identify material changes and ask how they affect program eligibility and score. Do not assume that a later application can contain a different history without explanation simply because the original profile has already produced an invitation.
Keep a written change log stating what changed, when you learned it and which documents support the correction. Obtain advice before relying on a claim you now know is inaccurate. The appropriate response depends on the actual facts and instructions, so this guide does not give a universal direction to accept, decline or resubmit an invitation. IRCC decides the application on the evidence and applicable rules.
Misrepresentation is a legal finding, not a label for every mistake
IRPA section 40 addresses material misrepresentation or withholding relevant facts and the consequences of a finding, including a five-year period in the applicable circumstances. A discrepancy should be taken seriously, but an article cannot decide whether every error meets that legal test. Do not hide an error because someone says only intentional falsehoods matter.
If IRCC raises a concern, preserve the original application, supporting records and correspondence. Have an authorised professional examine the actual allegation and response deadline. Federal Court work requires separate advice from a qualified lawyer. Keep the tone factual: identify what happened, correct the record through an appropriate process and avoid making new unsupported assertions to defend the old ones.

A pre-entry worksheet
This is an original blank worksheet, not a client account or a government checklist. Add truthful facts and mark unresolved points for advice.
| Question | Record to bring | What still needs an answer |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Assessment report and completed credential. | What Canadian equivalency does the report actually state? |
| Language | Accepted test version and ability scores. | Will the results remain valid at application? |
| Work | Duties, dates and working arrangement. | Does the program accept the claimed period? |
| Funds | Current requirement and accessible-money records. | Does a real exemption apply, or is evidence still needed? |
An original consistency-check exercise
Imagine that a planning spreadsheet says a job ended in June, an employer letter says July and a previous application says May. This is a fictional document-organising exercise, not a client example. Do not select the date that produces more points. Identify the source of each entry and obtain a truthful explanation supported by available records.
Repeat the exercise with a language result entered from the wrong field and an education claim based on the qualification's local title rather than the ECA result. Each problem requires a different correction. A longer explanation letter will not make a wrong score field or unsupported equivalency correct.
Prepare a short issues list for advice: the discrepancy, the original record, any earlier claim and the question needing resolution. This is more useful than presenting a supposedly final score while keeping the uncertainties out of sight. Keep the original evidence intact and document any correction rather than deleting the history.
Questions about Express Entry profile mistakes
Does an invitation mean all my claims were verified?
No. Supporting evidence and eligibility still need to be assessed at the application stage.
Can I use IELTS Academic for this purpose?
The current Express Entry page specifies IELTS General Training. Use the accepted test version and current instructions.
Can any job offer remove proof-of-funds requirements?
No. Check the exact program and exemption conditions on the current official page.
Is every clerical error misrepresentation?
An individual legal assessment is needed. Correct errors honestly and obtain advice about any material discrepancy or allegation.
General information only. Requirements can change and no outcome is guaranteed. IRCC, ESDC, the IRB, provincial authorities or the courts make decisions within their responsibilities.

IRCC: Express Entry language tests
The page identifies accepted test versions and requires results to be less than two years old at profile completion and PR application. A school language certificate or another version of an exam is not automatically an accepted Express Entry test.

IRPR section 87.1: Canadian Experience Class
The regulation sets CEC requirements, including its treatment of self-employment. An occupational category or a payroll label does not remove the underlying program test.
Opened October 20, 2026. Page date: 2026-10-15.
IRPA section 40: misrepresentation
The Act addresses material misrepresentation or withholding relevant facts and the consequences of a finding. It does not make every clerical error an automatic finding; individual facts and procedure require advice.
Opened October 20, 2026. Page date: 2026-10-15.
IRCC: November 2026 Express Entry job-offer changes
IRCC says that, effective November 3, 2026, the CRS will use a new Labour Market Integration factor. It compares eligible Canadian work experience points with points for a qualifying job offer in an eligible high-wage occupation; candidates can receive one, not both. IRCC says existing profiles will be recalculated, which may take up to two weeks, with invitation rounds paused during recalculation. A job offer can still matter for program eligibility even when it earns no factor points. Check the current rule and a person’s invitation date before applying this transition.
Opened October 20, 2026.
